Sketching prohibited! Military interdictions of drawing and artistic practice in European history from Early Modern times to the present The prohibition of drawing, referring to topographies or architecture, has rarely been a topic of art history or visual studies, although it can be accounted for in Europe since the 16th century.
But such interdictions prove the power that was ascribed to on site-drawings. They were decreed to impede military espionage, in reaction to the practice of producing, collecting and storing not only maps, but also images of the landscapes, cities, fortifications, and harbours of potential enemies, in order to be used in case of a military conflict. It can be assumed that these military restrictions of civilian artistic practices not only shaped those historic representations of land- and cityscapes and of architecture that exist in collections and archives today, but that they also shaped artistic practices of drawing on the spot.
While early examples of prohibitions of drawing seem to have been issued more locally, they can be found in national laws since the 19th century. Through a more precise knowledge of military interdictions of drawing, a new assessment of the role and power that were historically ascribed to visual representations of architectures and topographies will be possible. The effect of these interdictions can then be investigated on the basis of historical views of exemplary places that were affected by such restrictions.
New insights into the historical perception of landscape, cities and buildings can be expected.

Bingo: Mr. Bingo will talk about stuff that interests him, like social networking, revenge, turning silly ideas into real things, bad art, swiss rolls, childhood drawings and crowd sourced rap.
Bingo might sing a song about the internet, he might do some rapping, he might read a poem about animals, and it's highly likely that he will make up some stuff on the day. His infamous Hate Mail project, where fans paid a small sum for their own hand-drawn postcard of verbal abuse, gained him such popularity that he was forced to limit sales in order to keep up with overwhelming demand.
This collection of works has since been compiled by Penguin into a bestselling book of the same name. Alongside all this funny business, Mr Bingo has been commissioned by some serious clients and his illustrations feature regularly in publications such as TIME, Esquire and The New Yorker.

Glenn Greenwald has piped up in the light of the Charlie Hebdo Massacre. The lawyer and journalist, who became famous for his crucial role in the global surveillance disclosures, wrote a furious plea for an unrestricted freedom of press in his online magazine The Intercept. In his well worth readable contribution he accuses the Western media in the case of a right to blasphemy of partinsanship.
He contradicts the widespread view that the cartoonists at Charlie Hebdo were equal opportunity offenders. Carlos Latuff Source: The Intercept. Anti-Islam and anti-Muslim commentary and cartoons are a dime a dozen in western media outlets; the taboo that is at least as strong, if not more so, are anti-Jewish images and words.

He knew how to secure his existence by promising all pleasures to those who die while eliminating the infidels About what you think about this, you know, you are a major cartoonist, and you live in France.
I spent a lot of time thinking about it. But, me? I gotta like, you know, when I do something, it has to be more personal. I have to, like, make fun of myself. So instead of drawing the face of Muhammed, I drew the ass of Muhammed. Robert Crumb in conversation with Celia Farber, In February "Charlie Hebdo" was among the few papers, which avowed "Je suis Jyllands-Posten" and courageously decided to reprint the excommunicated Muhammad cartoons of the Danish journal.
A month later the cartoon magazine published the much disputed manifest of twelve noted writers against Islamism, among them Salman Rushdie and Philippe Val, the former chief editor of "Charlie Hebdo". The bottom line: Zero tolerance towards any kind of totalitarism. Here is the text in full:. We, writers, journalists, intellectuals, call for resistance to religious totalitarianism and for the promotion of freedom, equal opportunity and secular values for all.
Recent events, prompted by the publication of drawings of Muhammad in European newspapers, have revealed the necessity of the struggle for these universal values. It is not a clash of civilisations nor an antagonism between West and East that we are witnessing, but a global struggle that confronts democrats and theocrats. Preachers of hatred play on these feelings to build the forces with which they can impose a world where liberty is crushed and inequality reigns.
But we say this, loud and clear: nothing, not even despair, justifies choosing darkness, totalitarianism and hatred. Islamism is a reactionary ideology that kills equality, freedom and secularism wherever it is present. Its victory can only lead to a world of injustice and domination: men over women, fundamentalists over others.
On the contrary, we must ensure access to universal rights for the oppressed or those discriminated against. We reject the cultural relativism which implies an acceptance that men and women of Muslim culture are deprived of the right to equality, freedom and secularism in the name of the respect for certain cultures and traditions.
We refuse to renounce our critical spirit out of fear of being accused of Islamophobia , a wretched concept that confuses criticism of Islam as a religion and stigmatisation of those who believe in it. We defend the universality of the freedom of expression, so that a critical spirit can exist in every continent, towards each and every maltreatment and dogma. We appeal to democrats and free spirits in every country that our century may be one of light and not dark. This religious totalitarianism has caused a deadly mutation in the heart of Islam and we see the tragic consequences in Paris today.
I stand with Charlie Hebdo, as we all must, to defend the art of satire, which has always been a force for liberty and against tyranny, dishonesty and stupidity.

Comic reporting flourishes. Illustrators are increasingly commissioned by newspapers, magazines or NGOs to areas of conflict or to other places of special interest. This kind of journalism is slow, but has depth and is reflectiv because the rather long processing time prevents their authors from drawing hasty conclusions. The exhibition by Joost Pollmann gives an overview of the various aspects of reportage drawing, graphic journalism, observational documentary illustration and cartooning.
